Pregnancy is a time in the life of a woman where all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients required to be obtained by her.

A broad range of nutritious foods can consist of most pregnancy diets, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and healthy fat.

Cravings are a normal part of any pregnancy, and in most cases, it’s okay to indulge yourself (not every meal).aWhile you’re “eating for two,” it doesn’t mean double as much calories.

Most doctors are suggesting an average of 300 extra calories to fuel the changing body. When you think about what to eat for a healthy pregnancy, it’s also important to remember what food and drink to avoid while waiting for your baby.

  • 1) Alcohol– Alcohol is one of the foods to avoid during pregnancy. There are no known safe limits for drinking alcohol during pregnancy. It is safer to avoid all kinds of alcohol, including wine, beer, liqueur, wine-based beverages and traditional eggnog.
  • 2) Caffeine-A moderate amount of caffeine is safe during pregnancy. Limit consumption to 200 milligrams per day or 12-ounce cup of coffee per day. Remember that caffeine can also be found in soda, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks.
  • 3) Unpasteurized milk and cheese-Listeria, a type of bacteria, may grow in unpasteurized dairy products and may be hazardous to both mother and baby. Always read the label and buy only milk and cheese that indicates that they have been pasteurized. As soon as you go out for dinner, ask before you eat.
  • 4) Cold cuts, pate and hot dogs-Again, listeria is the culprit here, as it can continue to grow in your refrigerator. You can make these foods safe by heating them up to steaming and eating them right away.
  • Fish with mercury – In general, fish are an excellent source of protein during pregnancy, but avoid fish that tend to have high levels of mercury. These include swordfish, tilefish, shark, and mackerel. You can eat up to 12 ounces of seafood a week if you choose low-mercury sources such as salmon, cod, catfish, tilapia, flounder and light canned tuna. If you eat white tuna, limit it to six ounces a week.
  • 6) Raw or undercooked meat-Now is not the time to eat raw steaks and hamburgers, as toxoplasmosis may be present. When you’re out to eat, the meat should be very hot and well cooked.

    At home, the temperature for whole cuts should be 145 degrees F, 160 degrees F for ground meats such as hamburgers and 165 degrees F for chicken breasts.
  • 7) Raw seafood-Raw sushi is prohibited during pregnancy as it may be a source of harmful bacteria and parasites. Don’t eat raw oysters, but if the oysters are well cooked, they’re safe to eat. When you eat oysters, clams, and mussels, make sure the shells are open before you eat. Don’t eat them if the shells don’t open.
  • 8) Smoked seafood-Like deli meats, refrigerated smoked seafood is vulnerable to Listeria. It is best to avoid smoked salmon, trout, lox, tuna or mackerel unless they are cooked.
  • 9) Unwashed Fruits and Vegetables-The time has come to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, but be sure to wash them thoroughly under running water to avoid toxoplasmosis.

    Do not use dish soap; instead, scrub the surface with a small fruit/vegetable brush. Cut off any damaged or bruised area. Wash and dry the melons before cutting.
  • 10) Raw sprouts-Bacteria can grow on seeds before they begin to grow and are almost impossible to wash. Evitate raw alfalfa, clover and radish sprouts.
  • 11) Freshly squeezed juice-Some of these juices may contain E. There’s coli and salmonella. When you buy juice, make sure it is pasteurized.
  • 12) Raw Eggs-As long as the eggs are said to be pasteurized, do not eat anything with raw eggs due to the risk of salmonella. Common raw egg foods include homemade mayonnaise, Caesar dressing, Dutch sauce, and yes, even raw cookie dough.

While most foods and drinks are perfectly safe to enjoy, some should be avoided, such as raw fish, unpasteurized milk, alcohol, and high-mercury fish.
